The U.S. Attorney's Office announced on Monday that they have brought charges against a man who is accused of stealing $450,000 worth of cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The indictment alleges Soufiane Oulahyane, a Moroccan national, created a lookalike website of popular NFT marketplace OpenSea and used a cybercrime technique known as "spoofing" to illicitly obtain digital assets and NFTs. Oulahyane faces multiple charges, including wire fraud, the use of an unauthorized access device for the alleged crime and aggravate identity theft. He lured a Manhattan NFT owner to register on the fake OpenSea website and reveal the seed phrase to his digital wallet, which Oulahyane then used to transfer cryptocurrency and NFTs to his own account for sale. Oulahyane is currently detained in Morocco. He could face up to 47 years in prison if found guilty of the charges.
