BitMEX, once the largest bitcoin derivatives exchange measured by open interest, experienced a “major outage” on Tuesday at 12:13 UTC (8:13 a.m. EST), according to the exchange’s status page.

The major outage forced BitMEX to take their trading engine offline. However, the website did report that its API and web front end remained operational.

BitMEX was able to fix the issue and resumed trading at 13:40 UTC (9:40 a.m. EST), according to a tweet from the exchange's official account.

While the outage only lasted for about an hour and a half, this may prove to be a big opportunity for rival exchanges such as Bybit.

MuroCrypto, the popular cryptocurrency analyst and trader, took the opportunity to insult in a few strongly worded tweets and stated, “More than one year ago I said that Bybit will replace Bitmex. You are (expletive) welcome.”
