According to reports, the US Department of Justice has presented new evidence as to why President Trump should be allowed to remove Federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook, stating that her claims about interest rate cuts are unfounded. Cook is accused of mortgage fraud and is currently challenging the decision to dismiss her. On Thursday, government lawyers once again urged the judge to reject Cook's request to prevent her dismissal during the lawsuit, reinforcing arguments made during last week's hearing.
Hours before the submission of the legal documents, there were reports that the Department of Justice had launched a criminal investigation into Cook. The US government argues that the fraud charges first brought by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Pulte provide sufficient grounds under US law for Trump to dismiss her.
In the Thursday filing, the Department of Justice emphasized that the judge should not question Trump's judgment on having grounds for dismissal, and once again refuted the claim that the dismissal was merely a pretext to control the Federal Reserve and lower interest rates. The only 'evidence' is that the President has criticized the Fed's policies, the document states, but policy disagreements alone do not justify Cook's dismissal.
