Bitfly and Binance both confirmed on Twitter that Ethereum Classic has experienced a 51% attack near midnight on August 5, causing a reorganization of over 4000 blocks. This is the second attack Ethereum has suffered within one week.

According to a report published by Bitquery on, the week’s first 51% attack, occurred between July 29 and August 1, resulted in a double-spent of 807,260 ETC ($5.6 million). The attacker spent 17.5 BTC to acquire the hash power and profited more than 2800%. The hashing power on Ethereum Classic has decreased significantly this week, dropping about 20%. 

The value for the second attack on August 5 is still unclear at this point, but the attacker has already reaped $93,760 from block rewards solely.
