In a call held on August 6, Ethereum 2.0 developers discussed the problems behind the Medalla Eth 2.0 testnet launch, specifically why the network wasn’t stable at the beginning.

The Medalla testnet launched at 1 pm UTC on August 4. It then suffered a low 57% participation rate, failing to deploy 80% of its stake participating to validate the network as expected.

After experiencing a sluggish start, the network has stabilized at a participation rate of approximately 70%, according to beaconcha.in data (before publication). However, the declination of voted rate from nearly 80% (Thursday morning) to slightly over 70% (Thursday afternoon) means that the network is not completely stable.

The team summarized some major reasons for the sturdy launch. First, some validators may fail to update to the latest version because developers were rushing to fix “peering” bugs, which could disturb the connection between nodes, in some last-minute efforts.

On top of that, the launchpad complicated user experience because the team failed to prepare opportune node binaries. The developer team has also found that some users were holding multiple 32 ETH deposits.
