Asa Saint Clair, president of the UN-headquartered Worlds Sports Alliance, pleased “not guilty” to a wire fraud charge connected to allegedly selling fake cryptocurrency, according to Law360.
Prosecutors allege that Saint Clair cheated at least three investors out of thousands by claiming that the World Sports Alliance could help developing countries get access to water, food and sports facilities.
Saint Clair claimed that investors would see returns if they purchased the World Sports Alliance blockchain-powered virtual currency “IGOBIT.” Saint Clair never went through with what he promised investors however and allegedly spent all the money he raised on himself and his family.
Prosecutors noted that the IGOBIT coin never actually existed.
Saint Clair has been placed on house arrest in Arizona after being released on $500,000 bond. Prosecutors requested strict conditions for his release, as Saint Clair bought a one-way ticket to Madagascar when investigator interviews took place. Saint Clair would be arrested at the airport.
