Nearly $1 million worth of crypto funds were used to support a Russian operation aiming to interfere in the U.S. elections, a new analysis by blockchain analytics firm Elliptic found.

An arrest warrant has been put out for Russian national Artem Lifshits who is accused of being the leader of “Project Lakhta,” a group aiming to forge distrust of the U.S. political system in order to influence election outcomes. The warrant for Lifshits' arrest comes one day after sanctions were issued by the U.S. Treasury Department against crypto addresses tied to co-conspirators Anton Andreyev, Darya Aslanov and Andrii Derkach.

“Project Lakhta,” stole the identities of U.S. citizens to access major crypto exchanges including Gemini, Bitfinex, Poloniex and Binance, according to a recent announcement from the U.S. Department of Justice. Cryptocurrency flowing through these addresses were used to fund the operation.

Elliptic's report found that almost $1 million travelled through the sanctioned addresses listed on the U.S. Treasury Department website between May 2017 and January 2017. Transactions stopped after the 2018 midterm elections.
