The Justice Department has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google alleging the company uses anticompetition tactics to maintain its search engine's dominance and advertising businesses, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The case was filed in a Washington, D.C., federal court. It claims that Google uses an unlawful network of exclusionary business agreements to shut out competitors. The company then uses advertising revenue from the search engine to pay phone manufacturers, carriers and browsers to make Google the default search engine.

Google owns or controls search distribution channels accounting for about 80% of search queries in the U.S., according to the lawsuit and third-party researchers. A statistic which prosecutors say leaves no room for competition or innovation.
