The Central Bank of the Bahamas has launched its new digital fiat currency sand dollar, according to an announcement on Tuesday, October 21.

The sand dollar is a digital dollar of the Bahamian dollar. The stated goal of the new central bank digital currency is to make payments and financial systems more accessible to underserved communities in addition to cutting down service delivery costs and increasing efficiency of transactions.

CBOB assistant manager of electronic solutions Bobby Chen told the Nassau Guardian that the central bank is working on making the sand dollar interoperable with other global currencies.
