The U.S. Department of Justice, together with U.S. Attorneys for the Southern District of New York and the Northern District of California, has filed charges against two Russian citizens, Alexey Bilyuchenko and Aleksandr Verner.

Bilyuchenko and Verner are charged in the Southern District of New York with conspiring to launder approximately 647,000 BTC from the 2011 hack of Mt. Gox.

The lawsuit claims that starting in 2011, Bilyuchenko and Verner stole a large number of cryptocurrencies from Mt. Gox, leading to the eventual bankruptcy of the exchange. With the ill-gotten gains from Mt. Gox, Bilyuchenko built the crypto exchange BTC-e to launder money for cybercriminals around the world.
